What Makes a Blind Water Resistant

There is a wide range of window covering styles made from a variety of different materials. Wood blinds have always been a favorite of homeowners, and there are many styles of fabric shades that are extremely popular. However, these materials are susceptible to warping (in the case of wood) and mildew (on fabric blinds).

For humid areas like bathrooms and kitchens, we recommend blinds made from either vinyl/PVC or aluminum since these materials do not absorb water and have hard surfaces that don't retain moisture or harbor mildew.

Types of Water Resistant Window Coverings:

For the more humid rooms in your home, we suggest choosing from one of these categories of window coverings that are made from water-resistant materials that won't be damaged by the extra humidity:

Which Rooms Typically Need Water-Resistant Blinds?

Depending on the layout of your home and the region you live, these are the rooms that are more likely to need moisture-resistant window blinds:

  • Bathrooms
  • Kitchens
  • Laundry and utility rooms
  • Mudrooms
  • Indoor pools/saunas

You'll need to gauge just how humid each of these rooms are in your home, but usually any elevated levels of humidity warrant using moisture-resistant blinds. A large bathroom with plenty of ventilation and windows far from the shower/bath might be ok for any type of window treatment. But if the steam from the shower has nowhere it go, it's likely to end up collecting everywhere, including on your window coverings – so it's better to error on the side of caution.

For outdoor spaces like decks and patios, we offer Exterior Solar Shades to help cut down on bright sunshine, heat and glare. The material on these shades is highly water resistant as is the hardware and mechanisms, for long lasting outdoor use.

Coastal Humidity

Moisture-resistant blinds are also a great choice for humid climates, including coastal areas or where precipitation levels are extremely high. Wood blinds and shutters can absorb moisture over time, causing the wood to warp, crack and peel. Faux wood blinds are the better alternative since they won't absorb moisture and will continue to operate well and look great for much longer.
