What are Cordless Blinds?

What are Cordless Blinds?
BY BLINDSTER |

If you’ve got old-school blinds on the brain, you probably won’t associate cordless and blinds. But, there’s a problem with dangling cords on blinds and shades. According to the CPSC, nearly one child a month dies from strangulation by window covering cords. The solution? Cordless blinds and shades!

You may be wondering… don’t blinds need cords to work? Sure, blinds are strung on cords, but you don’t need cords to tilt them or even raise them. Over the years, window covering manufacturers have adapted various ways to have a cordless function. Cordless blinds and shades promote safety for children and pets, making your home happy and safe!

Well, there’s a few ways. Every blind or shade has its own unique cordless function… but in the end, the idea is that you don’t use cords to lift or tilt your blind.

First and foremost, cordless blinds still have cords INSIDE the material. After all, it must hang by something. Instead of pulling a cord to lift the blind through a pulley function, some cordless blinds will have a SafeLock button on the bottom rail. When you press and hold down this button, the tension around the strings within the blind is released, allowing you to simply push the blinds to the desired position. Once you let go of the button, the mechanism around the string tenses up again, safely locking them in place (Get it? SafeLock!).

Shoot, some cordless products are even easier to function… for certain blinds and shades, all it takes is gently lifting the bottom rail with your hand to the desired height. A plastic lip in the middle of the bottom rail helps hold it in place. And boom, done. That’s it—seriously!

Some cordless shades use a spring tension function, which works more along the lines of a projector screen. You can slightly tug the fabric towards you and downward, and the spring within the shade will allow you to roll the shade to its desired height.

Easy peasy, right? Who would’ve guessed that such a safe invention was so simple?

Of course, as we told you earlier, cordless blinds or shades are an essential to make your home safer for your children and pets. You know what they say… curiosity killed the cat. And don’t you know how tantalizing dangling cords can be to a kitten? The rest is history.

But, cordless options are not just for families and pet owners. They can be a great solution for those of us who tend to be persnickety when it comes to the perfection of our homes. Cordless blinds and shades offer a clean, sleek and uniform look throughout your home. If you have different types of window coverings throughout your home, more than likely, they will all have a different type of cord. If you choose cordless, there’s one less inconsistency to worry about.

No Cords? No Problems!

It’s important to remember that not every blind or shade works the same. Make sure you know exactly how your blind or shade functions before attempting to lower or raise it.
